Annoying Feature 1: Intuitions

Important

Our minds’ strongest intuitions are often totally wrong

Annoying Feature 2: Reference Points

Summary

  • reduce social media usage

Important

Our minds don’t think in terms of absolutes. we often compare ourselves with the reference points that are much higher than us, but we don’t compare with lower reference points

  • Olympic gold medalist - happy but from now on only downhill
  • Olympic silver medalist - really sad (cuz he missed the first place by few seconds. but he doesn’t realize he is the 2nd fastest human on the planet. )
  • Olympic bronze medalist - really happy if he missed few seconds he wouldn’t have even get the medal

Annoying Feature 3: Hedonic Adoptation

Important

Our minds are build to get used to stuffs

MARRIAGE

GETTING A GREAT JOB

GETTING LOTS OF MONEY

GETTING INTO YALE

AWESOME STUFF

Abstract

Investing in experiences makes us happier than investing in stuff

Don’t invest in the stuffs in the first place

  • big house, awesome car etc we don’t become happy because it sticks around.
  • its the same house day in and day out. we get bored

Invest in experiences

  • going on vacation
  • going on to concert these things won’t stick around

  • you actually want stuffs that go away
Proofs

Misconceptions

Maybe spending on experiences will make richer people happy. not the poor ones

maybe that’s just for all of us very well-off people. We’re all here at Yale. We have lots of awesome stuff. Maybe we have as much awesome stuff as we need and therefore, getting new awesome stuff isn’t going to help us. So we might as well invest in experiences. But the idea is maybe people from lower incomes or people who don’t have as much stuff, maybe if they got stuff that would make them happier. So maybe it’s like really just a function of being a richer kind of folk that we get this.

we need to have that awesome experience to get happy

nope imagining that experience also enough to make us happy

Experiences are good for other reasons too

when you tell about experiences to other people you and other people both gets happy. but it is less likely with the material stuffs

Experiences are less likely to lead to social comparison within ourselves and with others

your experience is different than somebody elses experince. hard to compare. but you can easily compare your car to someone elses car

How others feel ?

Annoying Feature 4: Impact Bias
